The Pike County Backpack Program feeds targeted Pike school aged children weekend meals.
It is a partnership between the community and the Pike County School System. The school counselors carefully select children in need and coordinate participation with the children’s parents. The school system also discreetly distributes the meals.
The program provides selected children with six meals for Saturday and Sunday. Bags are packed with two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners, two snacks and juices. Fruit and special treats are included occasionally. The children receive a bag weekly including holiday weeks. The bags average 8 pounds and cost about $7. There are 60 Pike County school children participating.
The program is powered by community churches including Christ Chapel Community Church, First Baptist Church of Zebulon, Mt. Gilead Baptist Church and Pike County Assembly of God, Methodist churches in Zebulon and Concord, Civic organizations such as Kiwanis and Pike County Family Connection.
